Biography

Davyd Valeriiovych Ishchenko was born on October 16, 2000, in the city of Ladyzhyn, Vinnytsia region. From childhood, he showed a deep love for Ukraine and its history. At the age of nine, he read Vasyl Shkliar’s 'Black Raven', a novel about the liberation struggle, which left a lasting impression on him. He was passionate about books, history, and geography, often winning academic competitions. Even while working part-time in his father’s restaurant, he would spend his breaks reading. He also enjoyed cooking, a skill he inherited from his family.

Davyd graduated from the Energy Faculty of the Agricultural College with honors and continued his studies at the National University “Lviv Polytechnic.” Alongside his education, he worked as a courier and waiter, later becoming an operator at the company “Nova Poshta.” Despite his civilian career, his interest in military service grew, and he prepared himself for the challenges ahead.

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Davyd immediately went to the military enlistment office. Although initially refused due to his student deferment, he volunteered to join the 125th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade. Serving as a UAV operator, he defended Ukraine in the Kramatorsk-Kreminna sector. In early 2023, he was transferred to the “Da Vinci Wolves” battalion within the 67th Separate Mechanized Brigade, where he took on the role of sapper. His courage and determination carried him into the fiercest battles around Bakhmut.

On May 20, 2023, while leading an assault group near Bakhmut, Davyd was killed in an enemy artillery strike.

His body was recovered after 45 days, and he was laid to rest in his native Ladyzhyn.

Davyd dreamed of establishing a rehabilitation and recreation center for soldiers in Zakarpattia. After his death, his father fulfilled this vision by opening the private estate “Zirka Davyda” in the village of Veliatyno, ensuring that his son’s legacy would live on.

The memory of Soldier Davyd Ishchenko endures as that of a bright, courageous young man. His commitment to his country and the sacrifice he made will continue to be cherished by his family, brothers-in-arms, and all who honor his legacy.
