Biography
Halyna Petrivna Sholomytska was born on April 13, 1945, in the village of Zhukishki, Lithuania. In her youth she married a Belarusian military officer, and together they moved frequently due to his service. Wherever the family lived, Halyna worked diligently, often employed in warehouses, while raising their children and supporting her husband’s career.
In the 1970s, the family settled in Chernihiv after her husband was transferred there. They received an apartment and built their life in the city, raising two sons.
Halyna was remembered as cheerful, sociable, and creative. She had a talent for sewing and a keen sense of style, always dressing with taste. She enjoyed gardening and spending time at the family’s summer house, remaining active and resilient even after enduring the loss of her husband and both sons.
On December 25, 2025, a devastating loss followed. A Russian drone hit the five-story residential building in Chernihiv where Halyna lived. The explosion caused a fire, and she perished in her apartment at the age of 80. Her loyal dog was rescued, but her cat was never found.
Halyna Sholomytska was laid to rest on December 30, 2025, at the Yatsevo cemetery in Chernihiv. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, grandson, and niece, who remember her as a warm-hearted woman who faced life’s hardships with courage.
Halyna will always be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother, a woman of strength and kindness whose life was cut short by war. She remains forever in the hearts of her family and all who knew her.
