Throughout his life, he worked in various professions, often abroad, and nurtured a passion for numismatics. His character was defined by resilience, discipline, and a deep sense of patriotism.

In 2013, Dmytro took part in the Revolution of Dignity, standing alongside fellow Ukrainians in defense of freedom and justice. The following year, he volunteered to join the 80th Separate Air Assault Brigade, participating in the Anti-Terrorist Operation in eastern Ukraine. His commitment to the defense of his homeland was unwavering, and he carried the spirit of service with him throughout his life.

With the escalation of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Dmytro once again took up arms. In January of that year, he signed a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Initially serving in the Air Assault Forces, he later transferred to the 103rd Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces. There, he held the position of driver-electrician in the anti-tank unit of the fire support company of the 64th Battalion. Known by his call sign “Nimets” (German), he was respected by his comrades for his reliability, courage, and steadfast devotion to duty.

On March 13, 2024, while carrying out a combat mission near the village of Bohdanivka in Donetsk region, Dmytro sustained severe injuries. Despite medical efforts, he passed away in hospital.
His sacrifice was honored by his fellow soldiers and his community, who remembered him as a true patriot who never hesitated to defend Ukraine.

Dmytro Salabai was laid to rest in his native Zolochiv, Lviv region. His legacy endures as that of a devoted son of Ukraine, a man who stood firm in the face of danger, and a warrior whose courage and sacrifice will forever remain in the memory of his family, comrades, and nation.
