Biography

Vitalii Viktorovych Markevych was born on July 1, 1995, in the town of Novyi Kalyniv, Lviv region. From a young age, he dreamed of a military career and dedicated himself to achieving it. After finishing school, he studied at the Kharkiv National Air Force University named after Ivan Kozhedub, specializing in aviation transport. His determination and discipline led him to graduate successfully and become an officer in the Ukrainian Air Force.

Vitalii was assigned to the 12th Separate Army Aviation Brigade named after General-Khorunzhyi Viktor Pavlenko, where he served as a flight aviation technician. His professionalism and skill quickly earned him respect among his comrades. With the outbreak of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, he took part in combat missions from the very first days, flying into dangerous zones and contributing to Ukraine’s defense with courage and precision.

On December 11, 2022, while performing a combat mission near the city of Kostiantynivka in Donetsk region, the Mi-8 helicopter carrying Vitalii and his crew was struck by a missile launched from a Russian MiG-31 fighter. The entire crew perished in the attack.

His sacrifice was recognized with the posthumous rank of Captain and the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, 3rd Class, awarded for his bravery and devotion to Ukraine.

Vitalii was laid to rest in his native Novyi Kalyniv, Lviv region. At home, he was remembered as a loving husband, devoted son, and caring father to his young child. His family and comrades recalled his cheerful spirit, his dedication to duty, and his unwavering belief in Ukraine’s victory.

The legacy of Captain Vitalii Markevych endures as that of a fearless pilot, a loyal defender, and a true patriot. His courage and sacrifice will forever remain in the hearts of his loved ones, comrades, and the nation he gave his life to protect.
