Biography

Roman Olehovych Hrytsyk was born on February 14, 1998, in the village of Drozdovychi, Lviv region. From childhood, he dreamed of becoming a soldier and pursued this goal with determination.

After finishing school, he entered the National Academy of Land Forces named after Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi, where he combined discipline with a love of reading and learning. His dedication and ambition marked him as a young officer with great promise.

Upon graduation, Roman was assigned to the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade “Edelweiss.” He began his service as a company commander, quickly earning respect for his leadership and initiative. His comrades gave him the call sign “Nelson,” a name inspired by his reformist spirit and innovative approach to military service. Over time, he rose to the position of deputy battalion commander, leading his men with courage and conviction.

Roman fought in some of the most difficult battles of the war, including the defense of Kyiv region and later operations in Donetsk and Luhansk. His bravery and professionalism were recognized with the Medal “For Military Service to Ukraine” and the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, 3rd Class. After his death, he was posthumously awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, 2nd Class, honoring his sacrifice and devotion.

On September 29, 2023, during combat near the village of Oleksandrivka in Luhansk region, Roman was killed while carrying out a mission.

His loss was deeply felt by his family, who remembered him as a loving son, a supportive brother, a devoted husband, and a proud father. His commanders respected him, and his soldiers trusted him, knowing he always stood by their side.

Roman Hrytsyk was laid to rest on the Alley of Glory at the Bendiuha Cemetery in Lviv region.

A memorial plaque was placed on the school he attended, ensuring that his name and legacy will be remembered by future generations.

The memory of Major Roman Hrytsyk endures as that of a fearless defender, a reformer, and a man whose life embodied courage, loyalty, and love for Ukraine. His sacrifice will forever remain in the hearts of Ukrainians.
