Biography
Andrii Valeriiovych Subotin, known by the call sign “Boroda”, was born on July 19, 1987, in the village of Tolbuzino, Amur region, in a family of border guards. His childhood was marked by frequent relocations due to his father’s service, which instilled in him resilience and adaptability. From an early age, he showed a love for books and poetry, memorizing verses and developing a strong sense of justice. He attended Kyiv Secondary School No.69 and later studied law at the Kyiv National Aviation University, where he also completed military training and received the rank of junior lieutenant.
After graduation, Andrii worked as a lawyer, continuing to improve his professional skills and earning respect among colleagues for his diligence and integrity. He was also deeply involved in community life in Irpin, where he lived with his family, raising a daughter. His commitment to civic duty was evident in his support for local initiatives and his readiness to help others.
In 2019, Andrii joined the Donetsk Border Guard Detachment, stationed in Mariupol, where he served as a legal officer. His dedication to service grew stronger with the outbreak of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Together with his comrades, he took up the defense of Mariupol, one of the most critical battles of the war. Despite being wounded in March, he refused evacuation and continued to fight, embodying courage and determination.
On May 5, 2022, Andrii married his beloved Valeriia in a symbolic ceremony at Azovstal, a testament to love and hope even in the midst of war. Just two days later, on May 7, 2022, he was killed during combat at the Azovstal plant in Mariupol. His body has not yet been returned to his family, but his memory remains alive in the hearts of his loved ones and comrades.
For his bravery, Andrii Subotin was posthumously awarded the Order for Courage, 3rd Class, and later honored with the title of Hero of Ukraine, receiving the Order of the Golden Star.
Andrii Subotin’s life was a story of devotion to justice and unwavering loyalty to his homeland. By risking everything, he protected the lives of many comrades and civilians.
