Biography
Iryna Viktorivna Shevchenko was born on November 1, 1970, in the village of Dariivka, Kherson region. From her youth, she was known for her strong principles and her instinct to protect those around her. She studied in Kherson, where she mastered the professions of weaver and shop assistant, and later worked at the local market. Life in her community reflected her caring nature, but also her determination to stand up for what she believed was right.
Following the Revolution of Dignity and the outbreak of war in eastern Ukraine, Iryna became actively involved in volunteer work. In 2014, she completed courses in first aid and tactical medicine, joining the volunteer medical unit “Vlad.” Her dedication to helping others soon led her to military service. On May 11, 2015, she signed a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine and joined the 36th Separate Marine Brigade. She served primarily in Shyrokyne, Donetsk region, first as a medical instructor and later as a radio operator. Her comrades affectionately called her “mother,” as she cared deeply for their well-being and maintained contact with their families.
Iryna was known for her energy, warmth, and resilience. She created a sense of home even on the front lines, cooking meals for her fellow marines and bringing comfort to those around her. At the same time, she was fearless in her duties, evacuating the wounded under fire and ensuring that no soldier was left behind. Her call sign “Skazhena” (Crazy) reflected her fiery spirit and readiness to rush to the aid of her comrades at any moment.
On July 1, 2019, while evacuating a wounded soldier near the village of Vodiane in Donetsk region, the medical vehicle she was traveling in was struck by an enemy anti-tank missile. Despite being rushed to the military hospital in Mariupol, she succumbed to her injuries later that day.
Iryna was laid to rest in Kherson, on the Alley of Heroes.
For her courage and devotion, she was awarded the Order “For Courage” III Class during her lifetime, and posthumously the Order “For Courage” II Class.
A memorial plaque was placed on her school building, and a commemorative marker was installed at the site of her death, ensuring that her sacrifice would never be forgotten.
The memory of Sergeant Iryna Shevchenko, a fearless medic, devoted comrade, and true defender of Ukraine, lives on in the hearts of her family, fellow marines, and all who knew her. Her life stands as a testament to compassion, bravery, and unwavering love for her homeland.
