Biography
Andrii Mykhailovych Fylypchuk was born on September 25, 1989, in Lviv, in a family of archaeologists. From childhood, he was fascinated by history and the work of his father, which shaped his future path. He studied at the Koropuz school and later graduated from the Faculty of History at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in 2011, specializing in archaeology.
In 2014, he completed postgraduate studies at the same university.
His academic career was marked by dedication and achievement: he became deputy director for research at the Historical and Cultural Reserve “Ancient Plisnesk” in 2015, led archaeological expeditions, and authored more than 150 scientific and popular works. His research focused on the early history of the Slavs and the medieval heritage of Ukraine, making him one of the most promising scholars in his field.
Despite his devotion to science, Andrii’s life changed dramatically with the outbreak of Russia’s full-scale invasion. On February 25, 2022, he volunteered to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine, serving in the 103rd Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces. Known by his call sign “Siry” (Grey), he quickly adapted to the realities of war, mastering the skills of a combat medic and gunner. He fought in some of the most difficult areas of Luhansk and Donetsk regions, saving lives and supporting his comrades with courage and faith. His guiding principles remained constant: God, Ukraine, and family.
On February 2, 2023, during a combat mission near the city of Kreminna in Luhansk region, Andrii was killed in action. His death was a profound loss not only for his family and fellow soldiers but also for the Ukrainian academic community, which lost a bright and dedicated researcher.
He was buried in the Lychakiv Military Cemetery in Lviv, where colleagues, friends, and comrades gathered to honor his memory.
The legacy of Andrii Fylypchuk endures as that of a scholar, a patriot, and a fearless defender of Ukraine. His life combined intellectual pursuit with selfless service, and his sacrifice serves as a reminder of true fortitude, loyalty and love for his country.
