Biography
Nataliia Romanivna Depa was born on September 1, 1992, in Lviv. From childhood, she was cheerful, energetic, and deeply fond of animals. She pursued her education at the Stepan Gzhytskyi Lviv National University of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology, where she trained as a veterinary surgeon. In civilian life, she saved countless four-legged patients and later expanded her professional path by becoming a cosmetologist, opening her own beauty center. Her dedication, compassion, and entrepreneurial spirit earned her respect in both fields.
Nataliia’s sense of responsibility and patriotism was evident long before the full-scale war. During the Revolution of Dignity, she volunteered by sorting medical supplies for Kyiv. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, she closed her salon and joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine, serving alongside her father and brother. She became a combat medic and head of the medical station in the 218th Battalion of the 125th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade. Her comrades knew her by the call sign “Vitamin,” a name that reflected her ability to energize and uplift those around her, she also cooked wonderfully (her borscht was especially praised) and brought even the most seriously wounded back alive.
Her combat path began in Kharkiv region, continued in Sumy region, and later in Donetsk region. In Bakhmut, Chasiv Yar, and Kostiantynivka, Nataliia saved the lives of many defenders, often risking her own. She organized fundraising for medical supplies, drones, and other essential equipment, while also caring for stray cats and dogs found near the frontlines. Some of these animals were adopted by soldiers, and one cat she named after herself was brought home to Lviv after her death.
On July 9, 2023, near the city of Lyman in Donetsk region, Nataliia was killed in an enemy airstrike.
For her courage and sacrifice, she was posthumously awarded the Order “For Courage,” 3rd Class, and the Honorary Badge of Saint George.
Junior Sergeant Nataliia Depa was laid to rest at the Field of Honor in Lychakiv Cemetery, Lviv.
Her memory is honored by a commemorative plaque at School No.1 in Lviv and by the countless lives she touched as a medic and comrade. She remains a symbol of bravery, compassion, and unwavering devotion to Ukraine.
